THE AE INDEX

In 2010, Robert Mbonu, Chairman and CEO of The Art Exchange, set up an advisory board.

Invited members varied from art collectors, gallerists and artists to distinguished individuals within the Nigerian art world.

These members included:

Rahman Akar; Founder of Signature African Art. This gallery has locations in Lagos, Nigeria and Mayfair, London.

Prince Olaseinde Odimayo; Revered art consultant and advisor. Odimayo has specialised in traditional, modern and contemporary African art for over 40 years

Jess Castellote, Current Director of the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos

Oliver Enwonwu; Renowned artist-curator and writer

Temitayo Ogunbiyi; Lauded contemporary artist and curator

The advisory board completed a fiscal, archival research project that resulted in, THE AE INDEX. Through methodical, rigorous selection, an initial list of qualifying artists was formed- it contained both living and deceased artists.

  • This initial list was comprised of artists that met all of the following criteria:

    a) they had been a practicing artist for a minimum of 25 years

    b) their AE-listed works had been in existence since 1991

    c) they had made notable, influential contributions to the international art world- through exhibitions that took place within West Africa, the wider continent and abroad

    d) they had a working art portfolio, that had maintained aesthetic resonance and material value within the international art market

  • THE AE selling and purchasing INDEX operates on a 10 year rule. Meaning that we only sell, purchase or valuate works that were made at least 10 years ago. Therefore, only works made before 2016 are featured on our selling and purchasing INDEX.

*Please note that all works made by deceased artists (who fulfil our qualifying criteria) are eligible for listing on THE AE INDEX.
